The best way of getting hold of me is to comment here. Alternatively you can PM or email me (email address is in Flynn's profile).

I have a Plurk account (also listed in Flynn's profile), but it will be the slowest way of getting hold of me.

In Character
Name: Flynn Carsen
Canon: The Librarians
Canon Point: During And The Trial of the Triangle, just after the plane vanishes in the Bermuda Triangle and before he arrives in Wonderland
Sex/Gender: Male
Actual Age/Apparent Age: 43

Belongings:
His clothes: suit, including a waistcoat and pocket watch on a chain with a mirror in the lid, but no tie. A small round, empty box in his blazer pocket.
Skills and Powers:
Knowing a lot of stuff (as mentioned below). Hand-to-hand fighting. Sword fighting. Sherlock-style deduction. Librarianism. Ability to use magic.

The magic-using ability isn't very well documented. We know that it requires power-focus-effect, but we don't know exactly what Flynn can do and exactly what he needs to use in order to do it. He has been seen using the way he says "I'm the Librarian" to convince people he's supposed to be there, teleportation and travelling seven seconds into the future.

So potentially he can do some quite powerful magic. In order to inhibit this in the Library I'm going to say that he can only do low-level small magic because the Library inhibits the power required to do anything more powerful.

Bookmark Description:
It looks like a pocket-sized old, hardback book. It's brown and the title "A History of the New York Metropolitan Library" is in gold letters, with the author being just "Judson". Inside it appears to be a very dry tome about the library and the building it's in, with no mention of the Library.

History and Personality:
http://thelibrarians.wikia.com/wiki/Flynn_Carsen

Flynn is a polymath who loves learning. He has twenty two degrees, four of which are PhDs in Comparative Religions, Cryptology and 15th & 17th century Spanish Literature. All of which stood him in good stead for becoming the Librarian, as he needed to use all sorts of knowledge to solve mysteries and find artifacts. When he was thirty he thought he could quite happily stay in college learning more things and accumulating more degrees. An alternate universe tells us that's exactly what would have happened had he not been thrown out of college.

Even at college, surrounded by other clever people, he was still the cleverest there. He likes being the cleverest and he likes to make sure everyone knows this. He wants to be the person who comes up with the ideas, sometimes to the point of not letting them finish a sentence when he's worked out where he's leading. Then he can claim their idea as his own. Or just claim he thought of it too.

He's struggled with this, having three other Librarians, who are also really clever, and are knowledgeable in areas that overlap with his own knowledge. It brings out all the pettiness in him and leads to the above behaviour. He doesn't recognise that what he does upsets other people. He's just not good at reading people. This is partly because he's pretty egotistic and partly because he's not used to having friends.

As a child he hid in a book. For ten years while he was the sole Librarian he had three friends and one of them was a sword. So he hasn't had the practise at picking up social cues and he doesn't really understand how to treat his friends. An example of this was when he sent Eve Baird a message saying "Do you like me?" with a check for yes and a check for no. Not only did he have no idea how she felt about him, he didn't know how to find out. Or how to let her know how he felt. There's an irony that he can do the Sherlock-style deduction, but he only picks up facts not feelings, and it doesn't help him relate to people.

Only having contact with a small number of people hasn't helped with all his 'eccentricities'. They were used to him so didn't need to help his social intelligence. Plus they were not your usual run-of-the-mill people and were used to working with people who were also not your usual run-of-the-mill people. And he spent a lot of time on missions, on his own. After twelve years as a Librarian he's become a better Librarian and a better person, but his eccentricities have been allowed to get out of hand.

All of this doesn't make him sound like a nice person. He is annoying - even his friends can find him a bit trying. But he does have his good sides. He cares about people, although he's not always very good at showing it. Part of it is that he's an ordinary human, so of course he cares about others. But part is because being the Librarian has made him protective of the rest of the population who don't know that magic is real and could be unknowingly in danger. He feels that part of his job as Librarian is to protect them. Even to the point of laying down his own life if necessary.

He's also easily distracted. Part of it is wanting to learn, so even when he's busy learning something, if he comes across something else then he'll want to learn that too. Right there and then. He's also distracted when on death-defying adventures. Part of it is the love of learning, part of it is wanting to show off to whoever he's with, part of it is wanting to educate whoever he's with and part of it is to distract himself from impending doom. It's already part of who he is, but he's also learned it as a defense mechanism to stop him from panicking. If he's busy enthusing about  seeing something he's only read in a book then he can't worry about it trying to kill him.

He's become something of a risk taker. Before becoming Librarian he never did anything dangerous. Then only a day after becoming Librarian he was off on a mission and in danger. He was pretty useless at protecting himself at that point, but it didn't stop him from loving the adrenalin high. After twelve years it's all got pretty mundane, and less of an adrenalin high and more business as usual. He doesn't think twice about putting himself in danger because he's always come out of it alive - he knows he has the skills to get himself (and others) out alive, and he's confident in his skills.

I am Flynn Carsen and I'm the Librarian. A Librarian. Not in this Library, another Library. In-- never mind where it is. Doesn't matter.

[He waves a hand around in front of his face]

What's important here are books. Books are always important, of course. We can learn all sorts from books.

[He coughs, having lost track and frowns, trying to remember what he was going to say. After a few seconds his expression brightens]

Except these books. They're dangerous. Some of them. I don't mean dangerous knowledge, I mean you'll come to harm, danger. So, we need to catalog them. We need signs and labels so we know which not to touch. It's a big Library, I can't do it on my own, so I'll need some help. Who's with me?
